The Formula and Why It Has Two Steps
Celsius and Fahrenheit disagree on two things, so the conversion has two steps:
- Degree size. Between water's freezing and boiling points there are 100 Celsius degrees but 180 Fahrenheit degrees. That makes one Celsius degree 1.8 (9/5) Fahrenheit degrees.
- Starting point. Water freezes at 0°C but 32°F, so after scaling you add 32.
Order matters in the reverse direction: subtract 32 first, then divide. Doing it the other way round is the most common reason a hand conversion comes out wrong.
Converting Celsius to Fahrenheit in Your Head
Quick estimate: double it and add 30
22°C → 44 + 30 = 74°F (exact: 71.6°F). It's exact at 10°C and within 2°F between 0°C and 20°C. Above that it runs high, by 4°F at 30°C and 6°F at 40°C.
Exact: double it, take off 10%, add 32
25°C → 50, minus 5 is 45, plus 32 is 77°F. Doubling and removing 10% is the same as multiplying by 1.8, so this gives the exact answer.
Worked Example: Is 38°C a Fever?
A thermometer set to Celsius reads 38°C, and you're used to Fahrenheit.
100.4°F is the threshold commonly used to define a fever, so 38°C is a fever. Normal body temperature is usually quoted as 37°C (98.6°F), although healthy readings vary by person, time of day and where the temperature is taken.
Weather Temperatures in °C and °F
| °C | °F | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| -20°C | -4°F | Severe cold; exposed skin is at risk of frostbite in wind |
| -10°C | 14°F | Hard freeze |
| 0°C | 32°F | Freezing point; ice on roads |
| 10°C | 50°F | Cool; jacket weather |
| 20°C | 68°F | Mild; typical indoor room temperature |
| 25°C | 77°F | Warm |
| 30°C | 86°F | Hot |
| 35°C | 95°F | Very hot; heat-stress risk rises |
| 40°C | 104°F | Extreme heat |
Oven Temperatures: °F to °C
US recipes use Fahrenheit, while most other countries bake in Celsius. These are the settings you'll see most often.
| °F | °C | Oven feel |
|---|---|---|
| 275°F | 135°C | Low, slow-roasting |
| 300°F | 149°C | Low |
| 325°F | 163°C | Moderate-low |
| 350°F | 177°C | Moderate, most baking |
| 375°F | 191°C | Moderate-high |
| 400°F | 204°C | Hot |
| 425°F | 218°C | Hot, roasting vegetables |
| 450°F | 232°C | Very hot, pizza and bread |
Rounded to the nearest whole degree. Recipes often round 350°F (176.7°C) to 175°C or 180°C, and either works fine in a home oven.
Frequently asked questions
When are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same number?
At −40. −40°C and −40°F are the same temperature, the only point where the two scales cross.
Is a 10 degree change the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit?
No. A rise of 10°C is a rise of 18°F. For temperature differences you only multiply by 1.8. The +32 applies to readings, not changes, so a forecast saying "5°C warmer than yesterday" means 9°F warmer.
Why does the US still use Fahrenheit?
Mostly habit and the cost of switching. Fahrenheit was already standard in the US before Celsius became the international norm. Replacing signage, thermostats and everyday familiarity has kept it in place, even though US science and medicine use Celsius.
What is room temperature in Fahrenheit?
Room temperature is usually taken as 20–22°C, which is 68–72°F.
What is the lowest temperature this converter accepts?
Absolute zero: −273.15°C or −459.67°F. Nothing can be colder, so lower inputs show an error instead of a meaningless number.
