Same quantity, different scale

Mbps and Gbps both measure data transfer rate in bits per second. The only change here is the SI prefix.

Exactly 1,000× apart

Mega means 10⁶ and giga means 10⁹, so one gigabit per second equals exactly 1,000 megabits per second.

Bits are not bytes

The lowercase b means bits. A byte contains eight bits, so Mbps and MB/s are different units.

What Do Mbps and Gbps Measure?

Mbps means megabits per second and Gbps means gigabits per second. Both describe a data transfer rate: how many bits can be transferred in one second. They are commonly used for internet connections, Ethernet links, network equipment, and other communication speeds.

The conversion is decimal because mega and giga are SI prefixes. Mega represents 10⁶ and giga represents 10⁹, so a gigabit contains 1,000 megabits. That gives the exact relationship 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps.

You may see binary prefixes such as mebi and gibi in computing, but those are different prefixes with different symbols. They do not change the Mbps-to-Gbps conversion on this page.

Mbps vs MB/s: Why Capitalization Matters

Mbps uses a lowercase b, so it means megabits per second. MB/s uses an uppercase B, so it means megabytes per second. A byte contains eight bits.

To convert a bit rate to the corresponding byte rate, divide by 8. For example, 1 Gbps is 1,000 Mbps, which corresponds to 125 MB/s as a raw unit conversion. That does not guarantee a 125 MB/s application download speed because real transfers can include protocol overhead and other bottlenecks.

Likewise, Mbps cannot be converted directly to a storage amount such as MB or GB unless a time interval is also known. A rate tells you how fast data moves; storage units describe an amount of data.
