The selected file order becomes the Bates batch order
Bates numbering is useful when page-level references must stay unique across a document set. This tool treats the selected PDFs as one ordered batch: it finishes the sequence in the first PDF, then continues with the next PDF instead of restarting at 1.
With the default settings, the sequence begins REF-000001, REF-000002, REF-000003, and so on. The digit setting controls minimum zero-padding. It does not truncate a number that grows beyond that width.
File order matters. The order shown in the batch list determines which document receives the earlier Bates range. If the production requires a different sequence, select the files in the intended order before processing.
When Skip first page of each PDF is enabled, page 1 of every source file is left unstamped. A skipped cover does not consume a Bates number.
A one-page PDF therefore receives no Bates number when cover skipping is enabled. Its CSV row records that there were no stamped pages.
Use these for matter codes, production labels, or other text that belongs around the sequence. For example, prefix ACME- and suffix -CONF could produce ACME-000125-CONF.
The first stamped page receives the start number you enter. The remaining stamped pages increment by one across the entire batch.
A six-digit setting turns 125 into 000125. If the sequence later reaches 1000000, the tool keeps all seven digits rather than cutting the value down.
If enabled, the current local date is appended to the visible stamp as YYYY-MM-DD. The CSV also records a separate processing timestamp.
Each source PDF is saved as a newly modified PDF inside the ZIP. Output names are prefixed with the batch position, such as 001-BATES-..., so two source files with the same filename cannot overwrite one another in the archive.
The CSV records the source filename, output filename, first Bates value, last Bates value, stamped-page count, and processing timestamp for each PDF. It is useful as a batch record and for checking the ranges after export.
The CSV is not a chain-of-custody certificate and does not establish that a production complies with a court order, discovery protocol, or organizational retention rule. Those requirements depend on the workflow in which the files are being used.
The stamp is drawn into the PDF page at your chosen margin. Existing footer text, exhibit labels, or scanned content near that edge can overlap it.
The tool checks the rendered text width and height before export. If a prefix, suffix, font size, or margin pushes the label outside a page, processing stops instead of drawing it off-page.
Helvetica, Times Roman, and Courier are standard PDF fonts. If a prefix or suffix contains a character that the selected font cannot encode, the tool reports an error rather than generating a broken label.
Adding visible text modifies the PDF and saving a new copy can affect an existing digital signature. Preserve the original signed file if signature validity matters.
A password-protected or otherwise unreadable PDF can fail during loading. This tool does not ask for or remove PDF passwords.
No. Files selected together form one continuous batch. The next PDF continues from the number after the previous PDF's last stamped page.
No. When cover skipping is enabled, page 1 of each PDF is left unstamped and the sequence advances only when a page is actually stamped.
Their ZIP output names receive different numeric batch prefixes, so one output cannot silently replace the other.
Yes. Enter 500 as the start number and choose six minimum digits. The first stamped page will display 000500, wrapped by any prefix or suffix you configured.
No. It previews the first page that will actually receive a stamp in the selected PDF. Use it to check placement and appearance before processing the full batch.
The component reads the selected browser File objects and processes them with client-side JavaScript; it contains no PDF upload request. Site-level analytics, hosting, or other scripts are separate from this component.
Do not assume so. Bates stamping changes the PDF and saves a new copy. If a signature must remain valid, keep the signed original and follow the requirements of your signing or production workflow.
No. It is a page identifier. Authenticity, production requirements, chain of custody, and legal compliance depend on the surrounding process and applicable rules.
