Convert euro cents to euros and back, whether you're counting coins, reading a unit price or checking a receipt.
100 cents = €1
A euro is divided into 100 cents, so converting means moving the decimal point. Move it two places left to go from cents to euros (275 → €2.75), and two places right to go back (€0.40 → 40 cents).
There are eight euro coins, all shared across the euro area. Each country has its own design on one side, but every coin is accepted in every euro country.
| Coin | Cents | Euros | Made of |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 cent | 1 | €0.01 | Copper-covered steel |
| 2 cent | 2 | €0.02 | Copper-covered steel |
| 5 cent | 5 | €0.05 | Copper-covered steel |
| 10 cent | 10 | €0.10 | Nordic gold |
| 20 cent | 20 | €0.20 | Nordic gold |
| 50 cent | 50 | €0.50 | Nordic gold |
| €1 | 100 | €1.00 | Two metals (bimetallic) |
| €2 | 200 | €2.00 | Two metals (bimetallic) |
You empty a jar of small change and sort it by coin. Count everything in cents first, then convert once at the end. That avoids adding up lots of small decimals.
Step 1: Multiply each coin by how many you have
| Coin | Count | Cents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cent | 37 | 37 |
| 2 cent | 24 | 48 |
| 5 cent | 18 | 90 |
| 10 cent | 15 | 150 |
| 20 cent | 9 | 180 |
| 50 cent | 6 | 300 |
Step 2: Add the cents, then divide by 100
The jar holds €8.05. Most of the coins are 1 and 2 cent pieces, but they make up only 85 cents of the total.
The amount is the same everywhere, but the format isn't. Most euro countries use a decimal comma and put the € sign after the number. So "2,50 €" on a German receipt is two euros fifty, not two hundred and fifty.
| Country | Two euros fifty |
|---|---|
| Ireland, Malta | €2.50 |
| Germany, France, Spain, Italy | 2,50 € |
| Netherlands | € 2,50 |
Cash rounding. Several euro countries, including Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Italy and Slovakia, round cash totals to the nearest 5 cents, so shops need fewer 1 and 2 cent coins. A total of €4.92 becomes €4.90 in cash and €4.93 becomes €4.95. Card payments are charged to the exact cent.
Fuel prices. Petrol stations often show a third decimal, as in €1.789 per litre. That last digit is a tenth of a cent. The converter accepts such values: €1.789 is 178.9 cents. The final bill is rounded to a whole cent.
Exactly 100. One cent is €0.01.
Yes. They are legal tender in every euro country, even where shops round cash totals to 5 cents and rarely give them out.
No. Cents and euros are parts of the same currency, so the rate is always fixed at 100 to 1. To change euros into another currency, you need a live exchange rate.
Each country formats numbers its own way. In Germany or France €2.50 is written 2,50 €, while Ireland writes €2.50. The value is the same.
