Reading Written Morse Code

Each letter is represented by a pattern of dots and dashes. In typed Morse, a single space separates letters, while a slash or three spaces can separate words.

Morse does not encode uppercase and lowercase separately, so decoded alphabetic text is returned in uppercase.

Dots, Dashes, and Signal Timing

Written Morse

This translator works with the familiar dot-and-dash notation. It is useful for learning patterns, translating messages, puzzles, and checking written Morse.

Actual Morse signals

Real transmitted Morse also relies on timing: a dash lasts longer than a dot, and the pauses inside a character, between letters, and between words have different lengths.

Morse Code FAQ

How do I translate text into Morse code?

Choose Text to Morse and enter your message. Supported letters, digits, and punctuation are converted automatically, with a slash between words.

How do I decode Morse code into text?

Choose Morse to Text, put one space between letter codes, and use a slash or three spaces between words.

Which Morse code does this translator use?

It uses International Morse patterns for A–Z, 0–9, and the common punctuation included in the converter table.

Why does decoded Morse appear in uppercase?

Morse code does not distinguish uppercase from lowercase letters. The same signal represents both A and a, so decoded letters are returned in uppercase.

What happens if I enter an unsupported character?

The tool stops that conversion and tells you which characters are unsupported instead of silently dropping part of your message.

Can this translator play Morse code audio?

No. This tool translates written Morse only. Audio Morse needs tone frequency and timing controls that are outside this translator’s purpose.
