What “Alternate Mix” Actually Does

Alternate mixing is different from simply appending one PDF after another. This tool walks through the source files in upload order and takes a small block of pages from each one before returning to the first file.

With two PDFs named A and B and a 1-page pattern, the automatic order is A1, B1, A2, B2, A3, B3…. A 2-page pattern becomes A1, A2, B1, B2, A3, A4, B3, B4…. With three source PDFs, the same cycle continues through A, B, then C.

The page board shows the exact export order. You can drag pages after the automatic mix, rotate them in 90° steps, or remove pages you do not want. The exported PDF follows that visible board from first card to last.

What if the PDFs have different page counts?

Mixing does not stop when the shortest file runs out. A source contributes pages while it still has pages available; the longer PDFs continue through later cycles. For example, A1–A3 mixed with B1–B2 at one page per source becomes A1, B1, A2, B2, A3.

What changes when I choose another mix pattern?

The 1-, 2-, and 3-page controls rebuild the automatic interleaving order from the active source pages. Manual drag ordering is therefore replaced. Pages you removed stay removed, and page rotations are retained.

When Alternate Mixing Is Useful

Front and back scans

If two scan batches contain corresponding page sequences, alternating them can rebuild the intended reading order before you fine-tune individual pages.

Related document sets

Mix matching pages from separate PDFs when the useful sequence is source A, source B, then back to source A rather than one complete file followed by another.

Block-based inserts

Use 2- or 3-page blocks when each source contributes short sections rather than single alternating pages.

What the Export Creates

Export creates a new PDF and copies the selected source pages into it in the order shown on the board. Rotation changes are applied to the copied pages. The original files are not edited in place.

Because the result is a newly assembled document, do not assume that document-level features from the originals, such as bookmarks, original metadata, or digital signatures, will carry over unchanged. If those features are important, check the exported PDF before replacing or archiving the originals.

The component reads the selected files and performs previewing and assembly in the browser; it does not contain a network upload step for the PDF data.

Alternate Mix PDF FAQs

How many PDFs do I need?

At least two. Alternate mixing needs more than one source; the tool will let you load the first file but will not create a mixed output until another PDF has been added.

Does upload order matter?

Yes. The automatic cycle follows the source-file order. If A was loaded before B, a 1-page mix starts A1, B1, A2, B2, provided both files have those pages.

Can I mix more than two PDFs?

Yes. With three files and a 1-page block, the cycle is A1, B1, C1, A2, B2, C2, continuing while each source still has pages.

What happens when one PDF is shorter?

Its available pages are inserted normally. Once that source has no pages left for a later block, the remaining PDFs continue contributing pages.

Will changing the block size undo my manual order?

Yes. Selecting 1, 2, or 3 pages rebuilds the automatic order, so drag-and-drop ordering is replaced. Removed pages stay removed and rotations remain applied.

Can I rotate or delete a page before mixing?

Yes. Use the page board to remove pages or rotate them left or right. Those edits are retained if you later switch between the available mix patterns.

Why can the exported file size differ from the originals?

The tool creates a new PDF from copied pages rather than concatenating the original files byte-for-byte. File size can therefore change and should not be interpreted as a compression measurement.

Does the tool preserve signatures and bookmarks?

Do not rely on that. The export is a newly created PDF assembled from copied pages, so document-level structures from the source files may not survive unchanged.
