Convert kg to lbs (and lbs to kg), with the answer in pounds and ounces too, plus a price-per-kg to price-per-lb converter for shopping abroad.
lb = kg ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ kg × 2.20462
Small amounts are where pounds and ounces read better than decimal pounds: 250 g is 0.55 lb, but most people picture it as about 9 oz.

Meat, cheese, produce and coffee are priced per kilogram almost everywhere outside the US, and per pound in US stores. A per-kg price looks about twice as high for the same value. To compare, multiply a per-kg price by 0.4536 to get the per-lb price, or divide a per-lb price by 0.4536 (multiply by 2.2046) to get per kg. This only converts the unit. Change currency separately.
Ground beef abroad is 12.90 a kilo, and at home it's 5.99 a pound (same currency). Which is cheaper?
Per-kg price to per lb
Or the per-lb price to per kg
Either way the 12.90/kg beef is about 2% cheaper, even though 12.90 looks like more than double 5.99.
Metric packs are sized in round kilograms and grams, and US packs in round pounds, so a recipe written for one rarely uses a whole pack of the other. A 500 g bag of pasta is 1 lb 1.6 oz, about 10% more than a US 1 lb box.
| Product | Metric pack | In pounds | Usual US pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pasta | 500 g | 1 lb 1.6 oz | 1 lb (454 g) |
| Butter | 250 g block | 0 lb 8.8 oz | 1 lb (4 sticks) |
| Granulated sugar | 1 kg bag | 2 lb 3.3 oz | 4 lb bag |
| Flour | 1.5 kg bag | 3 lb 4.9 oz | 5 lb bag |
| Rice | 5 kg bag | 11 lb 0.4 oz | 10 lb bag |
| Dry dog food | 12 kg sack | 26 lb 7.3 oz | 30 lb bag |
Your dog weighs 18.6 kg at a vet abroad, and you track its weight in pounds at home. (This is the converter's Load Example.)
Step 1: Divide by the exact factor
Step 2: Pounds and ounces, if your records use them
The dog weighs 41 lb. Flea, tick and worming products sold in Europe are banded by kilograms, and US boxes often by pounds. 18.6 kg falls in the 10–20 kg (22–44 lb) band on either box.
| Size | kg | lb |
|---|---|---|
| Cat or toy dog | 2–4.5 | 4.4–9.9 |
| Small dog | 4.5–10 | 9.9–22 |
| Medium dog | 10–20 | 22–44.1 |
| Large dog | 20–40 | 44.1–88.2 |
Bands differ between products, so read the actual box. If your pet sits right on a band edge, ask your vet which size to use rather than rounding the conversion.
International couriers quote rates in kilograms, usually in 0.5 kg steps, and charge for whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight. DHL Express and FedEx International calculate volumetric weight as length × width × height in cm ÷ 5,000.
A 50 × 40 × 30 cm box of clothes weighs 7 kg (15.4 lb) on your scale.
Volumetric weight
Chargeable weight in pounds
You pay for 12 kg (26.5 lb), not 7 kg. A smaller box would cost less than taking anything out. Check your courier's current divisor, as some services use 4,000 or 6,000.
Multiplying by 2.2 is 0.21% low: 80 kg comes out at 176.0 lb instead of 176.37 lb. That's fine for body weight or luggage, but noticeable for a 1,000 kg load (2,200 lb vs 2,204.6 lb).
This converter divides by the exact 0.45359237 instead, so it never builds up rounding error.
2 lb 3.3 oz. The 0.2046 lb left over after 2 lb is 3.27 oz.
Yes. "Kilo" is everyday shorthand for kilogram, 1,000 grams. It is not a separate unit, though in other contexts "kilo-" can mean a thousand of anything.
Close but not equal: 500 g is 1.10 lb. In Germany and the Netherlands, people still informally call 500 g a "Pfund" or "pond", which is easy to confuse with the 454 g pound.
The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act requires most US consumer packages to give the net quantity in both metric and US customary units, which is why a 1 lb box also says 454 g.
