The minutes part of a time in decimal hours, for filling in a timesheet. Multiples of 6 minutes give a clean tenth of an hour; everything else repeats or needs rounding.

Why 2.30 Hours Is Not 2 Hours 30 Minutes
Clock time counts in sixtieths; decimals count in hundredths. In 2.30 hours, the .30 is three-tenths of an hour, which is 0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes. Two and a half hours is 2.5 in decimal and 2:30 on a clock.
This is the most common timesheet mistake. Someone works 7:45 and types 7.45, which is 7 h 27 min, so they lose 18 minutes of pay. The opposite direction catches people too: a payslip showing 7.75 hours means 7 h 45 min, not 7 h 75 min.
The Hours → minutes mode reads 2:30 as clock time and 2.30 as a decimal, so it shows the difference: 150 minutes against 138.
Worked Example: Totalling a Weekly Timesheet
You record your shifts in hours and minutes, and need the weekly total in decimal hours to claim pay at $22.50 an hour. (This is the Load Example.)
| Day | Worked | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 7 h 40 min | 460 |
| Tuesday | 8 h 05 min | 485 |
| Wednesday | 6 h 50 min | 410 |
| Thursday | 8 h 20 min | 500 |
| Friday | 7 h 55 min | 475 |
| Total | 2330 |
Step 1: Add the minutes first, not the rounded decimals
Step 2: Convert to hours
Step 3: Pay
The total is 38.83 hours, $873.75. If you'd typed each day as 7.40, 8.05, 6.50, 8.20 and 7.55 instead, you'd claim 37.7 hours and come up $25.50 short.
Timesheet Rounding: Tenths, Quarters and the 7-Minute Rule
Many employers and billing systems don't record exact minutes:
- Tenths of an hour (6 minutes): the standard for lawyers' and consultants' billing. A 4-minute call is billed as 0.1 h.
- Quarter hours (15 minutes): common for hourly payroll. Rounding to the nearest quarter is often called the 7-minute rule: 1–7 minutes past a quarter rounds down, 8–14 rounds up.
US federal rules allow rounding to the nearest 5, 10 or 15 minutes only if it averages out over time and doesn't consistently shortchange employees. Rounding that always goes down isn't allowed. Many state laws are stricter. The rounding option above always rounds to the nearest step.
| Minutes past the hour | Nearest 0.1 h | Nearest 0.25 h |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 0 | 0 |
| 4 | 0.1 | 0 |
| 7 | 0.1 | 0 |
| 8 | 0.1 | 0.25 |
| 13 | 0.2 | 0.25 |
| 20 | 0.3 | 0.25 |
| 22 | 0.4 | 0.25 |
| 37 | 0.6 | 0.5 |
| 38 | 0.6 | 0.75 |
| 52 | 0.9 | 0.75 |
| 53 | 0.9 | 1 |
Minutes to Hours in Excel and Google Sheets
Spreadsheets store times as fractions of a day, so there are two different conversions depending on what you want to see:
- Decimal hours:
=A2/60turns 135 in A2 into 2.25. - Clock display:
=A2/1440with the cell formatted as[h]:mmshows 2:15. The square brackets matter: plainh:mmresets after 24 hours, so 1,500 minutes would show as 1:00 instead of 25:00. - Clock time back to decimal: if B2 holds 7:45 as a time,
=B2*24gives 7.75.
Large Minute Totals in Hours and Days
Screen-time reports, phone plans and streaming stats often give totals in thousands of minutes. Divide by 60 for hours, then by 24 for days.
| Minutes | Hours | Days and hours | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 16.67 | 16 h 40 min | Round-number streaming or phone-plan totals |
| 1,440 | 24 | 1 d | One day |
| 10,080 | 168 | 7 d | One week |
| 43,200 | 720 | 30 d | A 30-day month |
| 525,600 | 8,760 | 365 d | A 365-day year (the “Seasons of Love” number) |
