Time Zone Converter

Convert a date and time between cities worldwide, with daylight saving applied for that date. See each city's local time, day and UTC offset at once.

How Time Zone Conversion Works

Every local time is UTC plus an offset. To convert, take away the source city's offset to get UTC, then add the destination's offset. The catch is that offsets change during the year: most of North America, Europe and parts of Australia and South America switch to daylight saving time, on different dates. That's why this converter asks for a date and uses each city's rules from the IANA time zone database built into your browser.

destination time = source time − source offset + destination offset
09:00 in Mumbai (UTC+5:30) → 03:30 UTC → 12:30 in Singapore (UTC+8)

Worked Example: When New York and London Are 4 Hours Apart

New York and London are usually 5 hours apart. In 2026, the US moves its clocks forward on 8 March but the UK waits until 29 March. A 9:00 New York call during those three weeks:

20 March 2026: New York on daylight time, London still on GMT

09:00 EDT (UTC−4) → 13:00 UTC → 13:00 in London

6 April 2026: both on summer time

09:00 EDT (UTC−4) → 13:00 UTC → 14:00 BST in London

The same recurring meeting lands at 13:00 in London for three weeks, then 14:00. The same mismatch happens in autumn, when the UK changes back a week before the US. Converting with a fixed "5 hours" gets these weeks wrong.

UTC Offsets in January and July

Northern-hemisphere cities move forward in their summer and southern ones in theirs, so some pairs of cities are two hours closer together in one season than the other. Values are from the time zone database for 2026.

Half-Hour and 45-Minute Time Zones

Not every offset is a whole number of hours. India's single time zone sits at UTC+5:30, and Nepal is 15 minutes further ahead. When converting by hand, carry the minutes. Rounding India to "UTC+5" puts every meeting half an hour out.

Ambiguous Abbreviations

Time zone abbreviations aren't unique. "3 pm CST" could be Chicago or Beijing, 14 hours apart. When scheduling across countries, name a city or give the UTC offset instead.

Crossing Midnight and the Date Line

Converting can change the date as well as the time. 22:45 on Monday in London is already Tuesday morning in Tokyo and Auckland. The converter shows the weekday for every city and marks a +1 or −1 day shift relative to your chosen date.

The largest gap is across the Pacific. Kiribati's Line Islands, at UTC+14, are 26 hours ahead of Baker Island's UTC−12, although both are in the central Pacific, because the International Date Line runs between them.

Times That Don't Exist, or Happen Twice

When clocks go forward, an hour is skipped: in New York, 02:30 on the March change day never happens, and the converter warns you if you enter it. When clocks go back, an hour repeats, so 01:30 on the November change day happens twice. The converter uses the first occurrence. For anything critical, such as a scheduled job, use UTC, which never skips or repeats.

Frequently asked questions

Is GMT the same as UTC?

For everyday purposes, yes: both are offset +00:00. UTC is the precise atomic time standard. GMT is also the name of the UK's winter time zone, and the UK switches to BST (UTC+1) in summer.

When do clocks change in the US and Europe?

The US changes on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. The EU and UK change on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. The weeks between are when the gaps between cities shift.

Why is my city not in the list?

The list covers major zones, and your own zone is added automatically. Any city sharing a zone with a listed one, such as Toronto with New York, has the same local time.

Does India have daylight saving time?

No. India uses UTC+5:30 all year, as do China (UTC+8) and Japan (UTC+9), so their gap to Europe and the US changes when those regions change their clocks.
