Gallon Converter

Convert US, imperial (UK) and US dry gallons to litres, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, cubic feet and cubic metres at once. The result is also split into gallons, quarts and cups, and a price per gallon can be turned into a price per litre.

1 US gal = 3.785 L · 1 UK gal = 4.546 L

Three Gallons: US Liquid, US Dry and Imperial

The US liquid gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, the old English wine gallon. It is 3.785411784 L. The imperial gallon was introduced in Britain in 1824 as the volume of 10 lb of water, and since 1985 it has been defined as exactly 4.54609 L. It is about 20% larger than the US gallon. The rarely seen US dry gallon (268.8025 in³, 4.405 L) survives mainly as one-eighth of a bushel for grain and produce.

Gallons are still used in everyday life in the US, and for fuel economy and some drinks and garden products in the UK. Canada and Ireland officially use litres, although older people and older documents may still quote imperial gallons.

Gallons, Quarts, Pints, Cups and Ounces

Both systems split a gallon into 4 quarts and 8 pints. They part ways at the fluid ounce: a US pint holds 16 fl oz, a UK pint 20.

The converter shows any amount split into US gallons, quarts, pints, cups and ounces. For example, 2.3 US gal is 2 gal, 1 qt and 6.4 fl oz. To measure that with jugs, you need two gallons, a quart and a little under a cup.

Worked Example: Fuel Price per Gallon and per Litre

US pumps show the price per US gallon, while most of the world shows it per litre. How does $3.50 a gallon compare with a litre price?

Step 1: Divide by litres per US gallon

3.50 ÷ 3.785411784 = 0.925 per litre

Step 2: Going the other way, a UK price of 1.40 per litre

1.40 × 4.54609 = 6.36 per UK gallon (or 5.30 per US gallon)

$3.50 per US gallon is about $0.92 per litre. Convert the currency separately, using the exchange rate on the day. The price calculator below does the unit part:

US mpg vs UK mpg

Because the UK gallon is 20% bigger, the same car gets a 20% higher miles-per-gallon figure in the UK. A car rated at 50 mpg in a British review does about 41.6 mpg in US terms. Neither figure is wrong; they use different gallons.

US mpg = UK mpg × 0.832674 · UK mpg = US mpg × 1.20095
L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ US mpg = 282.481 ÷ UK mpg
