Worked Example: Reporting Indian Revenue Abroad

An Indian company's annual report shows revenue of ₹2,345 crore. You're writing it up for an international audience.

Step 1: Change the number unit (rupees stay rupees)

2,345 crore × 10 = 23,450 million rupees = ₹23.45 billion

Step 2: Change the currency, as a separate step

23,450 million ÷ 85 = $275.9 million

₹23.45 billion, or about $276 million at an example rate of ₹85 per US dollar. Use the exchange rate for the reporting date, and say which one you used.

Three Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reading crore as million. ₹5 crore is 50 million rupees, not 5 million. Getting it wrong understates the figure tenfold.
  • Mixing the unit change and the currency change. "₹100 crore = $1 billion" is wrong twice over. 100 crore is 1 billion rupees, which is far fewer dollars.
  • Treating "lakh crore" as a typo. It means 100,000 crore, or one trillion. Indian budget and GDP figures are usually given this way.
