Convert millions to billions and billions to millions, and avoid the translation trap where 'billion' means a thousand times more.
1 billion = 1,000 million
A million has six zeros and a billion has nine, so a billion is a thousand millions. Divide millions by 1,000 to get billions (2,500 million is 2.5 billion). Multiply billions by 1,000 to go back (0.8 billion is 800 million).
| Million | Billion | In digits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 million | 0.001 | 1,000,000 |
| 10 million | 0.01 | 10,000,000 |
| 100 million | 0.1 | 100,000,000 |
| 250 million | 0.25 | 250,000,000 |
| 500 million | 0.5 | 500,000,000 |
| 750 million | 0.75 | 750,000,000 |
| 1,000 million | 1 | 1,000,000,000 |
| 1,500 million | 1.5 | 1,500,000,000 |
| 2,500 million | 2.5 | 2,500,000,000 |
| 10,000 million | 10 | 10,000,000,000 |
| 100,000 million | 100 | 100,000,000,000 |
One report says a project cost $850 million. Another says a rival project cost $1.2 billion. How much more did the rival cost?
Step 1: Put both in the same unit
Step 2: Compare
The rival cost $350 million more. Headlines that mix units, such as "$850M vs $1.2B", make the gap look smaller than it is.
There are two systems for naming large numbers. The short scale, used in English today, adds a new name every three zeros: million (10⁶), billion (10⁹), trillion (10¹²). The long scale, still used in most of continental Europe and Latin America, adds a new name every six zeros, so its "billion" is 10¹², a million million.
Britain used the long scale until 1974, when the government officially adopted the short-scale billion. Older British books and documents may use "billion" to mean a million million.
Translating "billion" word for word is a classic error. A French or German "billion" is the English trillion. Here is what each language calls 10⁹ and 10¹²:
| Language | 1,000,000,000 (10⁹) | 1,000,000,000,000 (10¹²) |
|---|---|---|
| English (US and UK today) | billion | trillion |
| French | milliard | billion |
| German | Milliarde | Billion |
| Spanish | mil millones (millardo) | billón |
| Italian | miliardo | bilione |
1,000 in English today. In long-scale languages such as French and German, their "billion" is a million millions.
1,500 million. Multiply billions by 1,000.
Yes. Both are 500,000,000. "500 million" is usually clearer in writing.
M is million and B or bn is billion, so $750M is $0.75B. Some finance texts use MM for million, which is unrelated to billion.
