Convert millions to thousands and back when reading financial statements, rescaling spreadsheet tables or comparing figures reported in different units.
1 million = 1,000 thousand
Multiply millions by 1,000 to express them in thousands (2.5 million is 2,500 thousand). Divide thousands by 1,000 to express them in millions (1,260 thousand is 1.26 million). The decimal point moves three places.
Financial statements rarely print every digit. A note at the top of the table says what unit the figures are in. A revenue line of 12,450 under "$000" means $12,450,000, which is $12.45 million. Always check that label before comparing two reports.
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (in thousands), $000, £000, €000 | Multiply every figure by 1,000 |
| (in millions), $m, $M, $MM | Multiply every figure by 1,000,000 |
| K, k (as in 75k) | Thousand, from the metric prefix kilo |
An accounts table is in thousands. You need it in millions, to one decimal place, for a presentation.
Step 1: Divide each line by 1,000, then round
| Line | In thousands | In millions | Rounded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product sales | 1,260 | 1.26 | 1.3 |
| Services | 2,360 | 2.36 | 2.4 |
| Licensing | 3,460 | 3.46 | 3.5 |
Step 2: Convert the total the same way
The rounded lines add up to 7.2, but the rounded total is 7.1. Neither is wrong. See the next section.
Each line in the example was rounded up by 0.04, so the three rounding errors add up to 0.12 and the sum drifts to 7.2. The true total, 7.08 million, rounds to 7.1. That's why annual reports often carry the note "totals may not sum due to rounding".
Keep the total as the rounded true value (7.1), not the sum of the rounded lines. If the figures must add up exactly, for example in a chart, adjust the line with the largest rounding error and say so in a footnote.
| Million | Thousand | In digits |
|---|---|---|
| 0.001 million | 1 | 1,000 |
| 0.01 million | 10 | 10,000 |
| 0.05 million | 50 | 50,000 |
| 0.1 million | 100 | 100,000 |
| 0.25 million | 250 | 250,000 |
| 0.5 million | 500 | 500,000 |
| 0.75 million | 750 | 750,000 |
| 1 million | 1,000 | 1,000,000 |
| 1.5 million | 1,500 | 1,500,000 |
| 2.5 million | 2,500 | 2,500,000 |
| 10 million | 10,000 | 10,000,000 |
| 100 million | 100,000 | 100,000,000 |
1,000. A million is a thousand thousands.
500 thousand, written 500,000 or 500k.
Yes. The k comes from kilo, the metric prefix for a thousand, as in a salary of $75k.
Divide by 1,000 with a formula such as =A2/1000. Or keep the values and change only the display, using the custom number format 0.0, (one trailing comma scales by a thousand).
