Express any large number in billions, convert billions back to a full figure, and read billion-sized values written in scientific or E notation.
Billions = Number ÷ 1,000,000,000
A billion is 1,000,000,000: nine zeros, or 10⁹. To express a number in billions, divide by a billion, which moves the decimal point nine places left: 5,234,000,000 is 5.234 billion. Multiply by a billion to go back.
Scientific notation writes a number as a value between 1 and 10 times a power of ten. Calculators, spreadsheets and data files print the power after an "E". An exponent of 9 means billions, 10 means tens of billions and 12 means trillions.
| Number | Billions | Scientific | E notation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000,000,000 | 1 | 1 × 10⁹ | 1E+09 |
| 5,234,000,000 | 5.234 | 5.234 × 10⁹ | 5.234E+09 |
| 27,500,000,000 | 27.5 | 2.75 × 10¹⁰ | 2.75E+10 |
| 1,000,000,000,000 | 1,000 | 1 × 10¹² | 1E+12 |
An exported data file shows a revenue figure as 2.75E+10. What is that in billions?
Step 1: Read the exponent
Step 2: Divide by a billion (10⁹)
27.5 billion. Shortcut: subtract 9 from the exponent and shift the decimal point by what's left. Here 10 − 9 = 1 place, so 2.75 becomes 27.5.
Spreadsheets switch to E notation when a number is too wide for its column. Widening the column or applying a Number format brings back the digits. To show billions without changing the stored value, use a custom format with three trailing commas, each of which divides the display by a thousand:
Excel keeps 15 significant digits, and JavaScript numbers, which this converter uses, are exact for whole numbers up to 9,007,199,254,740,991. Billion-scale money and population figures are well inside both limits. Long identifiers such as card or account numbers are not, so store those as text rather than numbers.
| Number | Billions |
|---|---|
| 100,000,000 | 0.1 |
| 500,000,000 | 0.5 |
| 999,000,000 | 0.999 |
| 1,000,000,000 | 1 |
| 2,500,000,000 | 2.5 |
| 5,234,000,000 | 5.234 |
| 27,500,000,000 | 27.5 |
| 100,000,000,000 | 100 |
| 750,000,000,000 | 750 |
Nine: 1,000,000,000. That's in the short scale used in English. Some languages use "billion" for twelve zeros.
1 × 10⁹. A figure like 3.2 billion is 3.2 × 10⁹, or 3.2E+09 in a spreadsheet.
One times ten to the ninth power: a billion. Programming languages and calculators use "e" the same way spreadsheets use "E".
The column is too narrow, or the cell uses the General format. Widen the column or set a Number format to see all the digits.
